AU’s Optometry students had an amazingly high passing rate in the national examination this year. Thirty-four senior students from the Department of Optometry passed the 2021 National Optometrist Examination, and most of them were employed by the optometry industry immediately after their graduation. This outstanding performance reflects the quality teaching of the Department and the university’s full support for students to take national examinations for certified licenses.
“It is now required for every optical clinic and shop,” Dr. Rong-kai Zeng, professor and chair of the Department of Optometry, said, “to employ licensed optometrists.” In the past three years, AU’s optometry students have passed the Examination with the excellent passing rates of 86%, 88%, and 92% respectively, which is significantly higher than the national average passing rate of 34% among all the Optometry-related departments in other universities. Moreover, Ms. Yu-jia Liu, an Optometry student at AU, won second place among all examinees.
Chair Rong-kai Zeng added, “Some professors in this Department volunteer to offer intensive courses to help students preparing for the national examination.” The result was a resounding success as 34 out of 38 students passed the examination. This achievement has attracted the attention from the optical industry and it further opens up opportunities for our students to obtain employment in this ever competitive job market.
In an interview Ms. Yu-jia Liu said, “My four-year study at Asia University was a fruitful and enjoyable experience. I have a clear goal to pass the national examination so I devote all my time and energy to studying optometric knowledge and skills.” Aside from the academic studies, she also joined the volunteer team, organized by the department, to offer vision examination service for the underprivileged in the remote countryside. That experience has strengthened her determination to become a well-qualified optometrist. Among all the memorable experiences at AU, she continued to say, “Passing the national optometry examination is the greatest of all, and I am grateful that AU has paved the way for me to fulfill my dream to be an optometrist immediately after graduation.”
