Asia University (AU) was awarded NT950,000 by Ministry of Education for winning 17 medals in international art and design contests. Professor Jeffrey J. P Tsai, President of Asia University, said that AU has been ranked No. 1 in various performances among all Taiwan universities for seven consecutive years.
The annual award ceremony and press conference of the “2020 MOE’s Incentive Program for Encouraging University/College Students to Participate in International Art and Design Contests” was held on December 10, 2020 at the International Conference Hall of National Central Library. Asia University outshone others by winning 6 ADC awards and 11 Red Dots awards.
Professor Lin Pang-Soong, the Chair Professor of the Department of Visual Communication, Asia University, and also the Project Director of “International Design Competition (IDC),” said that this award incentive program encompasses 7 categories: general design; product design; visual communication design; digital animation; craft design; architecture and landscape design; and fashion design; It also covers 64 international competitions around the world. The students who win the medals from these competitions will be awarded with financial incentives according to their category of performances.
Wei-Yu Huang, a contestant from the Department of Visual Communication Design, Asia University, won the gold medal with the work, “Ken-Tien: Taiwan’s Traditional Weaving.” Awarded by New York Art Directors Club (ADC), this logo was designed specifically for a workshop of Taiwan’s traditional weaving crafts at the Cultural Heritage Park, Ministry of Culture. With interlacing patterns of warp and weft, Huang’s design creates optical illusions of 3D weaving on a 2D surface. Wei-Yu Huang was invited to share his designing idea and experience with all the conference participants on the stage. In the category of General Design, 11 art works by AU students were awarded by Germany’s Red Dot Design. Among them, “Track Back to You,” an album cover design, and “Empathy,” a poster design, were listed as “Best of the Best.”
Prof. Hui-Ping Lu, the chairperson of the Department of Visual Communication Design, said that they sent six students’ art works to the annual contest held by New York Art Directors Club (ADC). They won 1 Gold Medal, 3 Bronze Medals and 3 Awards of Excellence. According to ADC’s accumulated points system, AU is ranked 13th globally, and top 1st in Taiwan. AU is now known as one of the outstanding universities in the field of ADC Design.
Prof. Yuan-rong Li, Dean of the College of Creative Design, said that since 2007, AU has strategically mapped out plans to encourage its students to participate in the international design contests. The efforts have paid off and so far students have won 99 Red Dots Awards, 10 IF Awards, 2 G-Mark Awards, and 10 ADC Awards. AU will continue this tradition and aid its students in achieving their own goals in the fields of art and design.
