The Times Higher Education (THE) from the United Kingdom has released the "2024 World University Rankings" on the 27th of September. Ten universities from Taiwan have made it into the top 600 rankings. Both China Medical University and Asia University, which are part of the " China Medical University- Asia University System," have been indexed in the rankings. China Medical University is ranked second in Taiwan and first among private universities. Asia University has maintained its presence in the rankings for ten consecutive years, and is ranked in the third place in Taiwan overall, second among private universities.
In THE's latest "2024 World University Rankings," a total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions were selected, marking an increase of 105 universities compared to the previous year. This is the largest scale of THE's world university rankings in the past 20 years. The evaluation criteria are more comprehensive than in previous years, with 18 performance indicators covering five major areas: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry engagement.
Taiwan has ten universities ranked in the top 600 of the "2024 World University Rankings." In addition to National Taiwan University and China Medical University, which rank first and second in Taiwan, respectively, five other universities, including Asia University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Tsing Hua University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Taipei Medical University, are tied for third place in Taiwan, ranking between 401 and 500. Asia University has made steady progress over the past three years, ranking sixth in the nation and third among private universities in 2022, fourth in Taiwan and third among private universities in 2023, and tied for third in Taiwan and second among private universities in 2024. It has consistently been the top-ranked non-medical private university for three years.
The Chairman of the China Medical University- Asia University System, Chang-Hai Tsai, stated that the world university rankings published by THE are an important indicator of global recognition in academic research for universities worldwide. The inclusion of China Medical University and Asia University in the world rankings demonstrates the recognition of their academic performance and their continued progress towards becoming world-class universities.
President Jeffrey J.P. Tsai of Asia University pointed out that Asia University, which was founded 22 years ago, has been included in the global rankings of the Times Higher Education, Shanghai Ranking, QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report. Domestically, Asia University has been recognized as the "Best University in Taiwan 2023" by Global Views Monthly and as a "University with Outstanding Academic Achievements and Growth in 2023" by Cheers Magazine. Three years ago, Asia University began cultivating AI talent throughout the entire campus, and this year, it has taken the lead in positioning itself as a university for nurturing ChatGPT and generative AI talent, aligning with global technological trends in teaching, research, and learning. The university is continuously striving to enhance its academic research capabilities and improve students' international employability, aiming for higher international rankings.
The Dean of the Office of Research and Development at Asia University, Ching-Hsien Hsu, explained that, based on the data provided by THE, Taiwanese universities perform above the global average in the industry and research environment domains. However, changes in the assessment criteria for the research quality indicator have affected rankings. Asia University has been consistently hiring high-quality faculty, establishing key research centers and specialized laboratories, and maintaining robust research capabilities, all of which highlight the university's strengths and contribute to its favorable performance in these indicators.
