Dr. Min-Min Lee, chairman of the Department of Food Nutrition and Health Biotechnology, together with her team members Cheng-Yuan Lin and Sheng-Hsiung Huang, presented three new skincare products in 2021 BioAsia-Taiwan Exhibition, Taipei, from July 19 to July 28. They used tremella mushroom as the base material and invented a special kind of wound dressing which contains “mushroom component delivery applications by thermal feeling needleless electrospinning-nanofiber membrane.” The other two skincare products, according to Dr. Min-Min Lee, are a new patented technology with a microencapsulated structure which contains “compound essential oils with a special combination formula to promote wound healing” and “tremella fuciformis that promotes wound healing and rich polysaccharide essence to promote fibroblast activity.”
Asia University actively participates in this annual exhibition and presents its new products to the public. In this year’s exhibition, Chairman Lee and Cheng-Yuan Lin applied the technique of “needleless electrospinning nanofiber” and “microlipsome” to the skincare products. In cooperation with Unix company, Japan, they used needleless electrospinning technique (NLES), together with the Traditional Chinese compound prescription, to facilitate the recovery of the wounded skin.
Chairman Lee explained that the “needleless electrospinning-nanofiber membrane” has the advantage in its mechanical strength, high flexibility and high drug loading, and to go with the NLES technique, it can greatly improve the blood circulation and increase the percentage of medicine going through the skin.
Cheng-Yuan Lin, an adjunct lecturer and the owner of Royaldear Biotech Cosmetics. co., Ltd., encouraged and trained her students to get international perfumer certificates in her “Aromatics and Its Application” class. Working with AU’s mushroom research team, she also learned to extract essence from tremella mushrooms and made it into capsules which has a slow releasing effect and which can prolong the time of its preservation. Furthermore, the capsule can ensure a longer stay of essential oil on the skin and thus increase the skin collagen hyperplasia in addition to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Mr. Sheng-Hsiung Huang, a PhD student in Food Nutrition and Health Biotechnology, did his research on the flammulina velutipes, a new mushroom species. He also runs Wan-shen Biotech Farm, where flammulina velutipes and tremella mushroom are farmed under an environmentally Intelligent control system. He says that both mushrooms are bioactive and they show promising results in the animal experiments.
BioAsia-Taiwan Exhibition, as chairman Lee stated, has become one of the important annual events for faculty members and students in the Department of Food Nutrition and Health Biotechnology. Teaming up with AU’s Intelligent Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Innovation Center and Big Data Research Center, the Department of Food Nutrition and Health Biotechnology will continue to present its research findings and products to the public in the future.
